Did you know that minority women and older women have often been excluded from
health research?
ESTHER wants to change that!
In the past, health research has excluded
women, African Americans and other minority populations. For this reason, there is a lack of
understanding about their health. This can lead to treatment decisions and health education based
on the behavior and physiology of white men.
We hope that by now you have heard about the ESTHER Project, a landmark health study being done in the Pittsburgh lesbian community. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in all women. The ESTHER Project focuses on examining health and lifestyle differences that may increase the risk of heart disease among lesbians.
In order to accurately represent the lesbian population in Pittsburgh, it is vital that women 35 years of age and older, of all ethnic groups, income levels, and education and training participate in the study. Recruitment is still open for ALL women, but we are particularly looking for lesbian women who are:
Over the age of 55 or
Identify as a racial/ethnic minority
If someone you know belongs to one of the above groups, please encourage them to call and participate in the study.

Women will receive $50 for their time and participation. Free parking or bus tickets will also be provided.
