Spike It: Steel City Volleyball Returns
Please join us the weekend of September 10-11, as a group of volleyball enthusiasts will bump, set and spike their way to fun competition and new friendships.
The mission of the Steel City Volleyball League (SCVL) is to provide the Pittsburgh area's adult (18+) GLBT community – and its supporters – with a competitive activity in a recreational setting, equally emphasizing acceptance, sportsmanship and personal experience. SCVL fosters a supportive social environment while maintaining the integrity of the game.
In the Fall season (September – December), all skill levels are welcome. The Board ensures even competition by selecting teams that include players of all skill levels. The first few weeks include “open play” and skills clinics for less-experienced players.
The Spring season (January through April) involves teams that select their own players, many with more advanced skills. Beginners are welcome, but the level of play is higher and the competition is tougher. Each season requires a membership fee of approximately $40 -$45.
SCVL members don’t limit their volleyball playing to the Pittsburgh area. In addition to competing in regional tournaments, beginning this year, SCVL is the sponsor of the Steel City Classic, a North American Gay Volleyball Association (NAGVA)-sanctioned tournament. The two-day tournament will be held at the Monroeville Sports Center over Columbus Day weekend. Nearly 200 players are expected to come to Pittsburgh to compete.
SCVL is about meeting new people and having fun too. In addition to playing volleyball, the league hosts several social events at area bars and raises money to support local GLBT charities.
