PrideFest attendance required…no excuses!
PrideFest attendance required…no excuses!
by Rick Allison - GLCC Chair
Are you out? Are you proud? Are you out and proud?
While these three questions may seem simple to some or more complicated to others, I consider everyone’s attendance a requirement at Pittsburgh Three Rivers PrideFest on Saturday, June 17, 2006!
It does not matter if you lead the march with the Dykes on Bikes, with PFLAG or if you stand along the march route as a sidewalk spectator and supporter (sunglasses, wigs and scarves are optional if absolutely necessary). The important thing is that you be there!
In past years we have had representation from City Council, County Council and the Mayor. This year, with the possible attendance of the Governor, we expect that there will be a significant increase in the number of local and regional politicians who will attend. And with this being an election year, it is even more important than ever that our collective presence be know by the number of us who participate. Our goal for PrideFest this year is 8,000. Considering the local population and the oft quoted 10% GLBT estimate, this is a reasonable goal!
With the continued and escalating attacks on our rights, we simply do not have the option of not being seen, heard and counted. Our youth, our families, our politicians, our clergy, our fellow citizens, or in other words…everyone…needs to see us as we march to show our pride and solidarity. Only with this can we expect to live with…Pride not Prejudice! the 2006 PrideFest theme.
We have a lot to gain and a lot to lose! Be out, be proud, be yourself and be there!
