MEI to Implement New Strategies for GLBT Military Rights
The Military Education Initiative (MEI) is in the process of implementing a new, comprehensive grassroots strategy for bringing about the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, in conjunction with the Service members Legal Defense Network (http://www.sldn.org), by seeking grassroots support within key Congressional districts for a bill called the Military Readiness Enhancement Act (H.1059).
This bill was introduced by Congressman Marty Meehan of the House Armed Services Committee and currently has 113 co-sponsors in the House. One member of Congress whom MEI particularly wishes to reach out to within the next several months is John Murtha, a decorated war veteran himself with a great deal of clout on military issues.
Therefore, the MEI is looking for GLBT military veterans or allies in Murtha's district who would be willing to read up on the issue of gays in the military and then arrange for an in-district meeting with Murtha. Interested parties should contact Lara Ballard via e-mail at laballard@starpower.net or via phone at (202) 408-0087.
